Sync by 50 Wireless Headphones Review
Learn more about The Sync by 50 wireless headphones made by SMS Audio and rapper 50 Cent. Find out what makes these headphones better than others and why they don’t suck at TopTenREVIEWS.
Another pair of headphones from yet another rapper? Oh yeah! Hi I’m Rich Bonaduce with TopTenREVIEWS, and these are The Sync By 50 headphones made by SMS Audio, obviously in conjunction with the rapper, actor, and general media mogul 50 Cent. So what, right? Headphones are a dime a dozen, and headphones promoted by musicians are almost as ubiquitous. But these are different. For one thing they don’t suck. For another 50 didn’t just slap his name on them; driven by both his passion for music and his knowledge of mixing music, he was very much involved in the development of them. They also incorporate a different kind of wireless technology, called KLEER with a K wireless. Kleer is a technology platform used to transmit all sorts of wireless information... in this case, audio, and some control information, using a 2.4 gigahertz frequency, and some other circuitry, proprietary to SMS Audio. This enables some pretty astonishing dynamic and frequency response in these headphones; from 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz. Traditional wireless technologies, like bluetooth, have definite limitations when it comes to delivering audio with much fidelity. And when true audio fidelity can be delivered without draining batteries in a hurry, well, 50 might be on to something here. But because they are from 50, style might be as important as sound. Synch’s are available in Shadow Black and like these, Ghost White. Both have matching ear cushions and polished trim. But don’t be fooled by the creaking of the glossy, acrylic-looking plastic; they’ll hold up to abuse. Like 50 himself says; get the headphones you own now, and try THIS with them. I bet you’ll be rushing out to buy these after you break yours. As far as functionality, the setup consists of a dongle that plugs in to the earphone jack of your iPhone, or any other mini-jack audio source. That’s the wireless transmitter. The headphones are the receiver; and yet they’re still really light. Both the dongle and the headphones have to be charged separately though, since you only get one recharging cord is the package, so you can’t charge both at the same time. You’d think for the price they’d give you two cords. However, they are rated to last for 17 hours under a full charge, and there is a cable included in case you want to go the “wired” route. Now paring the two is easy and fast, and we didn’t experience any interference or signal-dropping during our testing. And with basic audio controls on the headset itself, you can set everything up and drop your music source into a jacket pocket and still have a little control over what you hear. Now as far as the audio quality is concerned, naturally, that’s dependent on the source material. We chose tracks that expose specific shortcomings in inferior headphones: low frequency reproduction, faithful acoustic sounds, and heavy electronic music. In each case, there’s not much to complain about with Fiddy’s Syncs. Now these aren’t noise-canceling headphones, but they don’t pretend to be, either. Anyway, the earmuffs are made from memory foam wrapped in soft cabretta leather, and they passively eliminate a significant amount of outside sound. This produces a very low noise floor for being able to hear even the softest details of your music. So if you want noise canceling headphones, there are plenty of choices for you. And if you want a killer music experience, I’d get these. In all of our audio tests, we were thoroughly impressed (blown away, actually) with how reliable and true the audio reproduction was. Whether it was low volume, low frequency thump, or airy open strings, these Syncs kept up with everything we threw at them. These headphones incorporate a Bass Boost feature, which I worried would be a simple hijacking of everything under 300 Hertz. But when we tested it out, it was actually a very subtle enhancement to the low frequencies, perhaps an addition of only a few decibels. Even on our electronic music, it was tasteful and unobtrusive. The result was an added richness and “space” to the overall experience. We can’t really find any thing wrong the Synch headphones by 50 from SMS Audio, except for maybe the price, and that lack of a second charging cord. But it is a premium product bearing a big name, with features and performance to match. These headphones will give you a top-quality listening experience, take some abuse, they’re stylish and full-featured; even with a few thoughtful extras thrown in, like a nice case to hold it all. Hence, the price. I’m Rich Bonaduce for TopTenREVIEWS where we do the research so you can just go and get some of these!
